Bangkok, Thailand– Datagate Thailand Company has signed a procurement deal for further Starstreak high-velocity missile systems, Thales announced on 16 September.
Thales officials declined to comment on the value of the order, or if additional work share would be passed on to Thai companies. However, the company did tell IHS Jane’s that deliveries of the system are expected to take place later in 2016 or early 2017.
The systems are to be fielded by the Royal Thai Army, with Thales signing the contract with Thai company DataGate to provide the missile systems and covers additional missiles and launchers.
The contract is a follow-on from Thailand’s prior acquisition of Starstreak in 2012 when the Royal Thai Army first procured the system in a deal worth THB378 million (USD12 million) for use by the RTA’s 7th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion based near Bangkok.
the STARStreak is a self-propelled high-velocity missile system designed to provide close air defence against a multitude of conventional air threats, including high-speed fixed-wing aircraft, unmanned air vehicles and late unmasking helicopter targets.
Powered by a two-stage solid propellant rocket motor, the missile is claimed to be the world’s fastest very short range air defence (VSHORAD) system, and also features multiple lightweight launchers that allow for swift deployment against battlefield threats.
The missile can reach a maximum speed of Mach 3.5 and also fitted with three high-density darts and laser beam riding guidance for maximum accuracy and engagement of smallest signature targets that are difficult to hit with legacy missiles.
