“I never thought I would need to know anything about car accident cases, but now that I do, I feel like I need a crash course. Where can I get information? How can I inform authorities? Who is the best car accident lawyer in New York to ask for legal advice?”
Getting into a car accident can quickly change the course of your life, especially if your accident was a severe one. One moment everything is fine, and the next you’re on your way to the hospital, or at least stranded on the side of the road talking to a police officer. You’re confused, and for good reason. Don’t worry because we can provide you with many of the answers you’re looking for.
In this series – what to do after a car accident checklist, we’re going to talk about the different things you’ll encounter if you’ve been in a car accident. Once it’s completed, you’ll have a much better idea of what you need to do to protect the integrity of your case.
Contacting the Police
What to do after a minor car accident? The very first thing you need to do after a car accident is call 911. Even if your accident was minor, and even if the other driver is insisting that he will absolutely write you a check right then for the damage on your vehicle, you need a police report. Never take the word of the other driver because you could have serious injuries down the road. You don’t really know how much of a settlement you will get, so you need to protect yourself.
Remain Calm
Just like in any car accident case, the moment you get out of your car to assess the damage (if you’re able to), you’ll start talking with the other driver. It might be small chit-chat, or it could turn into an argument. Remain calm, and if the other driver seems incapable of that, simply get back in your car and wait for the police to arrive. No matter what you do, don’t admit that you did something wrong.
