Washington – Medical equipment manufacturer C.R. Bard has agreed to pay more than $200 million to settle a number of vaginal-mesh lawsuits filed against the company. Bloomberg Business reported that the settlement would resolve at least 3,000 of the cases brought forth by women who said they sustain serious injuries from vaginal-mesh inserts produced by the company.

The settlement is stated to involve approximately one-fifth of the lawsuits outstanding related to the devices, which many female patients have said caused them organ damage, crippling pain, and other health complications. In accordance with the agreement approximately $67,000 will be paid to the women who are part of the settlement per case.

Bard has claimed in court filings that the devices were safe and effective.

Jason Wittes, an analyst with Brean Capital, has said in an emailed statement of the product liability case, “There’s still a quite a lot of liability given they’ve only settled about a third of the cases, but I think the company is well enough financially to not have an issue settling these cases.”
