Morocco and Spain signed on Friday, June 5, in Madrid, a package of cooperation agreements in the fields of justice, transport, tourism, environment and social development.

The agreements were signed as the two countries are holding their 11th high-level meeting under the co-chairmanship of Moroccan and Spanish heads of government Abdelilah Benkirane and Mariano Rajoy.

The two countries signed a draft joint statement on judiciary cooperation, a program on tourism, a draft protocol of agreement on transport, a memorandum of understanding on water resources, a draft declaration of intent on social development and a draft declaration of intent on twinning between the Loukous Basin Agency (northern Morocco) and the Hydraulic confederation Segura.

Bilateral ties between Morocco and Spain are currently excellent, said Rajoy at a joint press conference with head of government Abdelilah Benkirane, following the 11th Morocco-Spain high level meeting.

Morocco made gigantic efforts over the past years and has become a model country with an important economic growth and succeeded in reducing macro-economic imbalances, he said.

On bilateral security cooperation, Rajoy noted that the fight against jihadist terrorism is a priority shared by the two countries, adding that the “phenomenon of terrorism has no borders and threatens citizens’ security and the coexistence model of our societies.”

He recalled that Morocco has become Spain’s second non-European commercial partner following the USA, while Spain is Morocco’s top partner with 17,000 Spanish businesses exporting their products to the neighboring country.

The two countries signed in 1991 a friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation treaty wherein they pledged to make headway with their strategic partnership through holding regular meetings on the different matters of shared interest.

This tendency was reflected in the rise of Spanish exports to Morocco to 1.387 billion euros in 2015’s first quarter, posting an increase of 1.5% year-on-year, according to figures released by Spain’s economy and competitiveness ministry.

Some 1,000 Spanish enterprises, notably small and medium-sized enterprises, operating in different sectors are present in Morocco.
