“Allegations that Blaine Boudreaux caused four wrecks Sunday afternoon, two of them leading to the deaths of a homeless man and a 6-year-old boy, gave Houstonians pause as they wondered if someone could have stopped the carnage.”

In one of the crashes, the man is accused of running a red light and striking another vehicle.

The accident is one of many that have occurred in Houston already this year. Sadly, a number are attributed to impaired driving linked to intoxication. In fact, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the problem is so widespread that approximately 30 people die in the U.S. each day in an alcohol related motor vehicle accident. The CDC further states that the number amounts to one related death every 59 minutes.

“In 2012, 10,322 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.”

Transportation safety advocates and organizations like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) have long fought to decrease the incidents of drunk driving across the country. When a driver chooses to get behind the wheel they place their own lives in danger, but are statistically shown to pose an even greater threat to other drivers and passengers on the road. Thousands of individuals are impacted by a drunk driving car accident each year, many of whom sustain long-term or permanent injuries. CDC data notes that of the 239 child passengers who died in an alcohol-impaired related accident in 2012, more than half were passengers in the vehicle where a driver was the one impaired.

According to Houston based personal injury lawyer of 1800 Car Wreck , whose law firm, Eberstein Witherite, LLP has handled several drunk driving accident injury cases, there are multiple challenges faced by injured victims who survive such accidents that impact them long-term. Says the attorney, “In addition to coping with physical injuries, a number remain in a state of limbo when it comes to being compensated for damage claims. Many of these drivers are die hard law breakers, and fail to even carry insurance. We’ve seen the far reaching extent of the domino effect of a downward financial spiral that can occur for those who have to battle for compensation from negligent drivers who have the inability to pay all of a victim’s costs for damages.”

The CDC outlines a list of effective measures that have been taken to prevent deaths and injuries from alcohol impaired driving. These include:

  • The active enforcement of existing laws, promoting zero tolerance for those who break the law.
  • Health promotion efforts that influence action on the part of communities and organizations.
  • The requirement of mandatory treatment and assessment for those convicted of DWI.
  • The use of sobriety checkpoints.

The most effective step is taken on the part of drivers; however, in refusing to get behind the wheel of any vehicle if they have consumed any amount of alcohol.

The driver in the recent string of drunk driving accidents in Houston is now facing an intoxication manslaughter charge in connection with one of the collisions. The surviving victims and families of the deceased victims are making attempts to recover from the tragic events.
