Immigrant deportation numbers fall under Obama administration

The number of immigrants deported under the Obama administration is reportedly the lowest in almost a decade.

Washington – The number of immigrants that have been deported during both terms under President Barack Obama’s administration has been the lowest in almost a decade.  According to a report by The Associated Press (AP), internal government data obtained by the news source shows that as of April 20 a total of 127,378 individuals who were in the United States illegally have been sent home by federal immigration officials. The number is stated to be the lowest since the middle of the second term served by President George W. Bush.

The numbers show a continuing decline in deportations amid an ongoing battle involving a legal challenge to a plan announced by the administration to protect millions of immigrants in the U.S. from being deported.

Homeland Security officials have in part attributed the drop in the number of deportations to the changing demographic of individuals crossing the border.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stated during an oversight hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee of illegal immigration, “With the resources we have … I'm interested in focusing on criminals and recent illegal arrivals at the border.”
