New Orleans – A 5th Circuit Court of Appeals panel recently began hearing arguments in a case related to President Barack Obama’s action that could protect millions of immigrants from being deported, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Obama announced executive orders on immigration rules following the midterm elections in November.

The orders would expand a program protecting immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally when they were children from being deported, and also extend protections for the parents of children who are citizens of the U.S. and permanent residents.

Twenty-six states, including Texas have filed a lawsuit to block the plan. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has referenced Obama’s plan as “unconstitutional” stating that it grants “federal and state benefits to law-breaking immigrants.”

Victor Ibarra, a 43-year-old protester from Houston who is one of those calling for immigration reform is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “We are human. We want family to be together. We just want to be OK in this country, cause no trouble and have the opportunity to be in the U.S. all our life.”
