Asia – The aviation industry in Asia has reportedly faced widespread growth in the last decade that is fraught with challenges for airline carriers and regulatory entities. Multiple aviation disasters have been reported in the past few years involving Asian airlines that have helped bring to light some of the issues such as the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
Pilot shortages and air traffic control issues are among the problems cited in a recent AP report, which states that in a third of the airplane crashes in the Asia-Pacific region from 2008 to 2012 “deficiencies in regulatory oversight” were factors. This was noted in a report released by the International Civil Aviation Organization. “Deficiencies in safety management” were stated to be concerns in others.
Things that have led to the challenges include the massive economic growth and market liberalizations in areas such as Thailand.
DRA International aviation consultants principal Desmond Ross, who is also the former head of the Pacific Aviation Safety Office, has stated of the matter, “We’re in uncharted waters… I don’t think the world has seen this sort of growth before.”
