New Jersey – A federal grand jury has indicted New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez over allegations that he accepted gifts and campaign contributions in exchange for political favors. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the indictment handed down Wednesday accuses Menendez of an abuse of power for the benefit of a Florida eye doctor who allegedly provided the Senator with luxury vacations and other gifts.

Menendez is facing 14 counts of charges including bribery and false statements. The Florida doctor involved, Dr. Salomon Melgen, has also been charged. The indictment comes after a raid of Melgen’s medical offices in 2013 by federal authorities.

Menendez is the second New Jersey senator indicted on corruption charges since 1980. The lawmaker has maintained his innocence in the matter stating to reporters that he would be “vindicated” and “this is not how my career is going to end.”

The 61-year-old politician served over 10 years in the House of Representatives before joining the Senate in 2006.
