Morocco’s King Mohammed VI met on Friday with Bilal AG Cherif, secretary general of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), who was accompanied by the movement’s spokesperson, Moussa AG Attaher.

During this meeting which took place in Marrakech, HM King Mohammed VI reiterated his commitment to the preservation of the territorial unity and stability of the Republic of Mali.

The monarch also reaffirmed his full determination to contribute to a solution and a compromise that would counter the fundamentalist and terrorist organizations that threaten the Maghreb countries and the Sahel, and promote the development and dignity of the Malian people.

In this frame, the King encouraged the MNLA to continue to take part in the regional dynamics, initiated by the United Nations and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), as a realistic and efficient approach to reach a final and lasting solution to the current crisis.

For his part, Bilal AG Cherif gave an overview on the latest developments of the situation in northern Mali, and thanked the King for his commitment to the fight violence, extremism and terrorism that are threatening the Sahel and the Sahara.

This meeting was a part of the continuous efforts of the King of morocco to achieve lasting peace and stability in Mali, and to contribute to a settlement of the crisis in this country, since its outbreak in January 2012.

The MNLA was the only movement that fought against terrorist groups in northern Mali in the crisis of 2012. Members of MNLA were targeted in particularly by Mokhtar Belmokhtar ‘s groups and its leader Bilal Ag Cherif was seriously injured in Gao in June 2012.

The movement abandoned its claim of independence a few months after the outbreak of the crisis in Mali and showed a real commitment to take part of the process of dialogue and peace before the Operation Serval , an ongoing French military operation in Mali to stop the advance of terrorist groups towards the capital Bamako.

The MNLA remains the only movement that has the political and military means to impose peace between Bamako and the North. It is now campaigning for a united and indivisible Mali and actively involved in tracking down terrorists in northern Mali alongside the French army.
