It is a commonly held belief that a carpeted room can cause more irritation for allergy and asthma sufferers than one with a hardwood floor, but newly released studies commissioned by Shaw Floors suggest otherwise. Conducted by independent biomedical research organization Airmid Healthgroup Limited, the studies not only found that the use of carpets generally resulted in less airborne allergens than hardwood floors, but they also suggest that an effectively cleaned carpet can lower the allergen level even further.
Airmid Healthgroup Limited discovered that carpets can trap more allergen and microbial particles than hardwood floors, making those irritants less likely to become airborne and negatively affect air quality. Furthermore, once the test carpets were professionally cleaned, the level of allergens like cat hair and dust mites were further reduced both in the carpet itself and in the surrounding air. The cleaning process used for the studies included vacuuming, application of a cleaning agent, agitation and hot-water extraction.
