Social media and SEO efforts both work to increase traffic, conversion and retention to your website. They are the two big “S”es of online business. What you may not know, however, is that they are — or can be — two sides of the same coin.
Understanding the methods of each technique is essential for using the tools together. SEO is search engine optimization, strategies to help your website rank higher in Google, Bing, Yahoo and other user searches. Social media is more “getting the word out” through Twitter and Facebook.
How can one help the other? There are many ways. Put the keyword or keywords in your social media page titles. Decide which keyword is most important and make it a word in your Twitter page title, for example. This alone can help lead to higher rankings in searches.
Next, make your “tweets” and Facebook posts meaningful and informative. They should contain new and relevant information, with links back to your website. People quickly grow weary of obviously “spammy” messages and posts. The best way to build a following in social media is to be informative, funny, and perhaps even a bit edgy. Also, be sure your posts contain keywords.
“Combining social media and SEO efforts can be powerful for creating more traffic for your site,” stated Sherri Lyn Giguere, Online Business Exposure Specialist. “It is essential you use both with effective marketing methods if you want it to succeed.”
Finally, your website should contain links to your social media platforms, and social share buttons. Whether you’re posting news to a blog or using online press release distribution services to get your message out to the public – EVERY piece of content you create should in tern be posted to all your companies social channels. Creating social signals that point back to your website can positively affect SEO efforts.
As your website begins to rank higher in searches, your social media will grow in popularity, and vice-versa. This is a two-way street, so get the traffic moving both ways. There is no perfect way to make this all work together. It will require some experimentation. But once you understand and apply the above principles, your SEO and social media strategies will begin to yield positive results.
