Clear View Bag, a custom plastic bag manufacturer, has drawn from the same approach of NASCAR pit crew team to improve plant efficiencies. A team of twelve employees recently received four days of training lead by Bob Williamson of Strategic Work Systems. For more than a decade, Williamson has studied NASCAR racing as a model for improving the way people work together and focus on improving equipment performance.
“We focused on reducing changeover time on our printing presses. We used many lessons from motor-sports and applied them to our own process. Changeover times are already dropping”, said Todd Romer, Vice President of Operations. “Strategic Work Systems taught us that pit stops in NASCAR used to be four minutes. That was standard and accepted but by seeking better ways to do the very same things NASCAR pit changes now get under thirteen seconds. While thirteen second changeovers are not in the cards for Clear View Bag, but we are now very aware that there is always room for improvement,” Romer said.
“Motorsports racing provides us with many models for high-performing organizations. We have learned that championship racing teams practice many of the principles our clients strive for in modern manufacturing and maintenance, from teamwork and leadership to cost effectiveness and equipment reliability and much more. Our ongoing study of championship race teams and pit crews helps us teach our clients to improve their competitiveness and be more effective in their own races”, according to Williamson.
“We are always striving to improve and remain competitive in this market. These improvements will also improve lead times, reduce costs and improve our customer service,” Romer said.
