The Sporty Girl’s Skin Guide

How to preserve and care for your skin during high impact sport from the Harley Medical Group

09/19/2012 (press release: OnlinePR) // Natasha Bradley or Lucy Page

As the excitement of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics draws to a close, many of us will be inspired to take up more exercise, whether that’s a casual morning jog or team sports in your local park after work. High impact sport however doesn’t just put a strain on the joints; it can play havoc with your skin. The Harley Medical Group (www.harleymedical.co.uk) has today put together some advice to help Sporty Girls look after their skin and stay glowing after their exercise or training regime.

Bernadette Harte, Senior Nurse Counsellor from The Harley Medical Group says “Although exercise is great for fitness and circulation in the skin, which helps to flush out toxins and boost cell renewal, high impact sports, such as running or aerobics, can be damaging to the face as the jolting impact can tear and damage the collagen.

We have a number of non-surgical treatments to repair and replenish skin after exposure to the winter elements and impact sport. Treatments such as skin peels and microdermabrasion are quick and effective ways of rejuvenating skin.”

The Harley Medical Group’s tips to take care of your skin while doing high impact exercise are:

1. The repetitive motion in running and other high impact sports can cause the skin to lose its elasticity, which consequently can cause the skin to look older. The Harley Medical Group recommend using Anti Aging Youth Serum to help firm and tone the skin and reduce the early formation of fine lines and wrinkles before they become a problem.

2. All that toil and sweat in the gym or on the treadmill can leave skin prone to breakouts as bacteria blocks pores. Remember to cleanse your skin after exercising, using a product such as The Harley Medical Group’s Gentle Cleanser and if possible don’t wear makeup while you are working out.

3. If spots do become a problem, try the Group’s Replenishing Exfoliator to remove dead skin cells in advance or why not book a session or two of laser treatment to really knock the problem on its head.

4. Remember that running outside, even in winter, still exposes your skin to the sun and its damaging rays so wear a high factor SPF such as the Enhanced Performance SPF. Wind can also damage and dry out your skin so wear a good moisturiser and drink lots of water to hydrate the skin.

5. For people with rosacea, high impact sport and sweating can cause this condition to flare up with more blood flowing into the area on the cheeks. Sufferers may want to consider a laser solution to clear up their skin and do lighter exercise which isn’t so heavy on cardio instead.

6. Women should wear a good sport’s bra to support their bust and prevent stretching out of the ligaments that hold up the breast. In the shop, bounce up and down to find a good fit – your bust should be held tight to the chest in a good sport’s bra.
