The Harley Medical Group has released summer skincare tips and advice for people working in busy cities across the UK. As the weather heats up and trains, buses and tube networks become more crowded and the streets more congested, especially with an influx of visitors to the UK for the Olympics, it is extra important to take care of the skin to prevent outbreaks and damage caused by external pollutants.

With a change in temperature, and many London tubes increasingly hot and sticky as the Olympic crowds pour in to the capital, it is important to cleanse thoroughly and use products that form a protective barrier against the skin. Humid public transport can cause the skin to produce more oil and sweat which can result in outbreaks of spots and adult acne. The Harley Medical Group’s skincare products contain powerful anti-oxidants to combat free radical damage caused by pollution, such as the Gentle Cleanser and the Anti-Microbial Cell Renewal Cream.

Smog levels in London have also been on the rise, with The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs issuing a warning ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony and many other British cities experiencing high pollution levels. Pollution causes skin damage as toxins in the smog and dirt clog up pores, leaving a tired, dull looking complexion. Long term, pollution can also exacerbate wrinkles and cause dry patches as the free radicals deplete collagen and oxygen in the skin and speed up the ageing process. The Harley Medical Group’s Anti-Oxidant Oil Free Moisturiser will help to form a protective barrier on the skin. It is also recommended that a high factor SPF is used every day, even when cloudy, to combat damage from the sun’s rays.

Exfoliation is a great way to remove the additional dirt and pollutants exposed to the skin through commuting and walking around the city in summertime. Non-Surgical treatment, Medical Microdermabrasion, helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, brighten the complexion and return skin to a healthy glow. Both Agera and Obagi Blue Skin Peels are suitable, and work deep within the skin to stimulate collagen and encourage cell renewal, leaving skin much clearer and brighter.

Lisa Littlehales, Lead Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group, says: “Cleansing is even more important when the summer makes everything more humid, and pollution in the air increases bacteria on the face. It’s worth keeping some cleansing pads in your desk at work. Use a lighter moisturiser than normal, but choose one with a high SPF. Office air conditioning is also very drying on the skin so remember to drink lots of water to keep the skin fully hydrated.”
