His father, Charles, was turning 90, was in poor health, and Paul, along with his siblings, wanted to throw a life celebration for him. However, as Paul related, due to his father’s health issues and difficulty in travelling, it was hard to get the greater community of his friends and family all together in one place.
Paul – who has a master’s degree in Biblical counseling, took a proverb from the bible as inspiration. As part of the theme for a unique 90th birthday gift, Paul used Christian Proverb 18:21 – which speaks of the power of life and death being in the words that we speak. The entire celebration was a surprise for Paul’s father. A notice was put in the Church bulletin, as well as emailed to the congregation, asking people to surreptitiously call-in and not spoil the surprise. Paul’s parents listened to the keepsake CD twice through together. As Paul related, “It was life-giving for my mother to hear how loved they are by other people. My father paused the recordings several times so they could process what was shared”. The recordings were also sent to Paul’s siblings so they could enjoy the recordings that talked about the “rich times” and rich life of Paul’s father.
