TJ Hughes is to reopen its Middlesbrough store with the creation of more than 80 new jobs.

From the end of September, the discount department store will again serve customers from its original premises in Captain Cook Square shopping centre close to the prime Linthorpe Road thoroughfare.

The store closed in August 2011 after the national homewares, clothing, electrical, toy and beauty retailer went into administration.

It was purchased by Lewis’s Home Retail and at the time, CEO Anil Juneja, committed to rebuilding TJ Hughes as a national chain. The reopening of the original Middlesbrough store is another indication of his long term ambitions for TJ Hughes.

Anil says: “I’m delighted to announce that TJ Hughes is returning to Middlesbrough and to its original premises. It’s fantastic news for the town and local economy. We’re really looking forward to seeing people back in the store.

“The TJ Hughes offering is perfect for the current economic climate, offering famous brands that people know and trust, at affordable prices to suit every household budget.”

Lynn Stainsby, Captain Cook Square Centre Manager, added: “We are delighted to welcome TJ Hughes back to Captain Cook Square Shopping Centre. A Middlesbrough favourite, we are sure our shoppers will be very pleased to see the store back in the town centre.”

Anil is confident that TJ Hughes can bring bigger brands in fashion, homewares, gardenware, electricals and toys back to Middlesbrough’s high street and still provide excellent value for money with very keenly priced product lines, such as its cheap perfume range.

The Middlesbrough TJ Hughes department store offers 46,000 sq ft of retail space over two floors. It will be the eighth TJ Hughes store to be reopened by Lewis’s Home Retail, following those in Eastbourne, Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle, Widnes, Cannock and its flagship store in London Road, Liverpool.
