Pet owners know how tough four-legged friends can be on carpets, but the flooring experts at Karastan claim to have the problem licked with their SmartStrand carpet. In an effort to promote its pet-friendly flooring, the carpet manufacturer is now holding a Best In Show Contest on Facebook, inviting animal lovers to submit a photo of their favorite pet for a chance to win a 6-by-9-foot bound SmartStrand carpet and a canvas print of their winning photo.
To enter, contestants must like Karastan on Facebook and submit a photo of their pet through the contest page, located at www.facebook.com/KarastanCarpetsandRugs/app_208195102528120. Entries will be taken until Sept. 11, 2012 and a winner will be chosen at random by Karastan on or around Sept. 12, 2012.
“The Best In Show Contest is a great way to let pet owners know about this exceptional Karastan product, and who doesn’t love browsing photos of cute animals?” said Barry Greenberg, sales manager at A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring, a Greater Boston flooring store. “Pets can be tough on carpets, but thanks to SmartStand’s advanced fibers, animal lovers won’t have to worry about the mess caused by muddy paws and shedding fur.”
Karastan has been a leader in carpet technology since 1928, when its founder built a power loom that could produce craftsmanship comparable to hand-woven rugs. At the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago, Karastan invited more than 5 million visitors to walk on its carpet, then cleaned one half to show how easily its rugs recovered. With SmartStrand, the company once again put its products to the test by using a machine to simulate 20,000 steps, a year’s worth of foot traffic, and found that SmartStrand carpets were much more resilient than nylon and PET carpets.
Key to the durability of Karastan SmartStrand carpet is its DuPont Sorona polymer fibers, which have a built-in ability to shed stains and wear. That means there’s no coating to wear out or wash off, and most stains like red wine and pet urine wash out with water and a mild detergent. The fibers are even durable enough to resist discoloration from bleach.
SmartStrand is more than just durable though; it’s also eco-friendly. While most carpeting is made primarily from petroleum, 37 percent of the Sorona fibers that make up SmartStrand carpets are derived from renewable resources like corn sugars. Reducing the use of petroleum products means the equivalent of one gallon of gas is saved for every seven yards of carpet produced, which adds up to 10 million gallons of gas saved annually. Additionally, production of the SmartStrand fibers uses 30 percent less energy than the nylon used in other carpets, helping to further diminish greenhouse gases.
“Karastan is dedicated to manufacturing beautiful, durable carpeting that doesn’t ignore our responsibility to the environment,” added Greenberg. “Greater Boston homeowners want responsibly produced carpeting that can stand up to their kids and pets, which is why so many of them are switching to Karastan’s SmartStrand carpets.”
