When three employees of a Chester motor finance company were recently handed a charity challenge, they quickly jumped to it – from a height of ten thousand feet.

The intrepid trio from The Funding Corporation decided that a sponsored sky dive would provide them with a high speed solution to raising charity funds.

That’s why Mark Rogers (26), Rick Hughes (24) and Jo Shaw (24) were seen last week clambering into a light aircraft at Tilstock airfield near Whitchurch in Shropshire.

As the plane reached its highest point, each took it in turn to jump with a tandem sky diving instructor, and enjoyed a 30-second freefall before their ‘chutes opened at five thousand feet.

The money-raising challenge came from automotive industry charity BEN which is this year marking its 107th anniversary, and which dedicated a week in July to birthday fundraising.

Friends, family and work colleagues of the three provided £530 of sponsorship money for the charity – which was doubled up by The Funding Corporation to create a £1060 donation.

The company – which provides finance for car purchases and operates a national network of used car retail outlets – has long been a supporter of BEN, as well as local charities and good causes.

BEN provides support for people in need who are, or were, connected with the motor industry.

For account manager Mark Rogers and his collections department colleague Jo Shaw, this was their first ever nerve-jangling leap into the unknown.

But call centre team leader Rick Hughes proved that he had a head for heights four years ago.

During a visit to Southern China, Rick – who currently plays football with Boughton Athletic FC – made a bungee jump from the top of the Macau Tower, at 764 feet the world’s highest bungee drop.
