Staff from a Stourport funeral home have revamped a children’s play area at a West Mercia Women’s Aid refuge for women affected by domestic abuse.

Five volunteers from The Midcounties Co-operative Funeralcare in Bridge Street, Stourport, have cleared the garden and painted the play area at the refuge, which is run by West Mercia Women’s Aid Worcestershire.

Kelly Payton, a Funeral Director at the Bridge Street branch, said: “We chose the refuge’s play area because it’s for children and that drove us because we are parents and grandparents ourselves. We wanted to give something back to the future generation.”

“It also ties into International Year of the Co-operatives, which is all about working together to create a better future for young people.”

Michelle Sealey, Regional Hostels and Helpline Manager for West Mercia Women’s Aid, said: “It’s now a much nicer environment for the children and, as a charity, it was something we couldn’t afford to do. It’s so kind that the Midcounties Co-operative Funeralcare stepped in.”

Other local businesses also provided help for the refuge. B&Q in Stourport donated eight bags of bark, while Wigley DIY of Barracks Road also provided bark and edging roll.

West Mercia Women’s Aid comprehensive support services, including temporary refuge accommodation, community support programmes for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. West Mercia Women’s Aid also offers a 24 hour Domestic Abuse Helpline for women living in Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford/Wrekin – 0800 980 3331 & 0800 783 1359.

The Midcounties Co-operative has an extensive colleague volunteer programme where colleagues can spend up to three days a year on volunteering activity as part of their paid work time.
