For a state that prides itself on being active and physically fit, Colorado’s child obesity rates continue to rise at an alarming rate. According to Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent health about 27 percent of children considered overweight or obese. The Cherry Creek School District is launching a new, unconventional fitness program in an effort to engage students in an active lifestyle.
Cherry Creek Schools will be sharing five Railyard Conditioning Courses, which is an obstacle course made of interchangeable rails and platforms design and manufactured in Colorado. The Courses can be configured into different layouts to optimize the effectiveness of the fitness session and keep students engaged.
Lee Spieker, founder of Railyard Fitness, says exercise brings children far more benefits than physical health and well-being. Being physically active has a positive effect on a child’s ability to store and process information, which can influence academic achievement resulting in higher self-esteem.
“It’s about having fun and being a kid while simultaneously getting a full body workout,” Spieker says. “These kids have no idea how hard they are actually working their bodies. They just feel like they’re jumping around and climbing on a life-size version of Lincoln Logs.”
Railyard Conditioning Course is used by hundreds of schools, health clubs, and sports conditioning centers around the worlds and provides students with a fun and functional workout the develops cardiovascular strength, increased balance and flexibility, endurance, coordination and an aerobic workout that burns calories.
Spieker states, “Child obesity is a serious issue and now is the time to support P.E. if we want to prepare for the health care challenges of the future. We hope that Railyard will inspire these children and lay the path for a lifetime of positive exercise experiences for our youth.”
Cherry Creek School District installed the five conditional courses and is currently being used by students.
