Music fans everywhere would be crazy to miss the Vikingland Band Festival Parade Marching Championship in Alexandria, Minn. Join the 20,000 spectators and 2,000 performers at the 28th Annual event on June 24, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.

The Midwest’s finest high school marching bands bring their talents to Alexandria and pull out all the stops as they march down Alexandria’s extra-wide main street. This year, 19 different high schools are competing for the title including local favorites, Alexandria Jefferson, Bemidji, Maple Lake, New York Mills, and the reigning Grand Champions, Park Center.

With the exception of Grand Champion, there is one award that each and every band vies for- the People’s Choice Award. Since its inception in 1989, twelve different bands have been named the People’s Choice winners. Last year’s champion, Bemidji, is back, but 6-time winners, the Mankato Lancers are returning to the competition. This year’s festival will have more than 30 people’s choice judges to make the difficult decision, and one team will walk away with the honor.

The bands aren’t the only ones recognized for their hard-work and dedication. Each year, the festival’s Grand Marshal is chosen to honor the men and women who contribute to youth, music and the community. The 2012 Grand Marshal is Jim Eidsvold in recognition of his strong support for the Alexandria marching band and the Vikingland Band Festival. Eidsvold served on the band booster board and played a large role in raising funds for new uniforms. As the owner of Henry’s Foods, he donates food and water for all of the participating band members on the day of the parade, as well.

There is no need to bring a lawn chair or arrive extra early to reserve a spot. Bleacher tickets for the Vikingland Band Festival go on sale June 1 and are available online for ten dollars. Ticketed seating is availabe on 6th Avenue on the east side of the street facing the judges platform or on the 8th Avenue People’s Choice zone on the West side of the street. The 8th Avenue seating has an emcee providing commentary between performances.

These summer parade bands are at their peak in late June, and they have worked hard for this competition. Join the fun and head to the 28th Annual Vikingland Band Festival Parade Marching Championship for a day of entertainment, fun and friendly competition.
