This got him thinking about the problem. “I was reading a report on the cost of components that go into an iPhone,” he says. “The total was less than $200.00. I thought, if they can build an iPhone for less than$ 200.00, why can’t we make a basic but effective hearing aid for the same amount?”
As an attending physician in otolaryngology, Dr. Cherukuri found that he saw too many patients with hearing loss going home without a solution because they couldn’t afford the hearing aid prices— many hundreds, or thousands, of dollars were usually needed to pay for them. “As a physician, I know the effects of untreated hearing loss: depression, social isolation, anxiety and symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s dementia.”
After conducting a hearing aid quality comparison of several hearing aids and sound amplifiers in the under-$200 range, Dr. Cherukuri says he found that most failed to work well on clearly amplifying the human voice. “I decided to focus on developing the best hearing aid at a reasonable price which used typical hearing aid batteries and could be effective for the most common types of hearing loss,” he says. “i was looking for a ‘one-size-fits-most’ hearing aid, similar to reading glasses that can be purchased at the drug store.”
Dr. Cherukuri then created the MDHearingAid line of hearing aids to exact technical specifications so that the range of sounds associated with the human voice would be amplified without overly amplifying background sounds. He says that a person should buy the best hearing aid that they can afford. Dr. Cherukuri recommends that everyone should undergo a hearing test before purchasing a hearing aid. The FDA allows a person to sign a waiver should they choose to purchase a hearing aid without a medical evaluation.
