As baseball season reaches full swing, Chevrolet is looking to help more local communities enjoy America’s pastime with its third-annual Diamonds & Dreams program. Taking entries online from participants across the country, Chevy will refurbish 12 youth baseball fields in 12 weeks to deserving communities. Selected entrants will also receive a $1,000 gift card and be automatically entered to win the grand prize, a 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco.

More than 25 youth fields have been refurbished since the inception of Diamonds & Dreams. This year, Ripken Design, owned and operated by famous baseball brothers Cal Ripken, Jr. and Bill Ripken, will complete the 12 winning field renovations. Ripken, Jr. has partnered with Chevrolet for nearly 20 years and has supported the Chevrolet Youth Baseball program that has helped Chevrolet dealerships raise more than $13 million for community youth baseball programs in the last seven years.

“A lot of us can remember how the ball fields we played on growing up made up such a big part of our summers,” said Bill DeLuca III, president of Haverhill, Massachusetts Chevy dealership Bill DeLuca Chevrolet Buick GMC. “We encourage everyone in Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley to enter the Diamonds & Dreams contest so that our local kids may fully appreciate America’s favorite pastime. Of course, winning a new Chevy wouldn’t be too bad either.”

Those wishing to spruce up a baseball field for his or her community can enter Chevy’s Diamonds & Dreams program at One winner per week will be chosen for 12 weeks through the contest’s end on July 22, 2012.

As the contest’s grand prize, the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco is designed to help communities in its own way, by reducing fuel consumption and emissions through its eAssist technology. The Malibu Eco’s eAssist light-hybrid drive system uses regenerative braking to recharge its lithium-ion battery during deceleration. That efficient design will allow the Diamonds & Dreams grand-prize winner to achieve up to 37 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the city.

Malibu Eco drivers don’t have to worry about sacrificing performance for fuel efficiency, however. The midsize sedan features a direct-injection four-cylinder engine under the hood that combines with an electric motor to serve up 182 horsepower. Inside the cabin, the standard Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system allows for creature comforts like voice-activated hands-free calling and access to streaming music through Pandora internet radio.

“The Malibu Eco may be fuel efficient, but it’s far from being an econobox,” added DeLuca. “Chevrolet designed it with the modern driver in mind, so you don’t give up acceleration for efficiency and you can remain connected with the latest technology. If you want an intelligent vehicle, the Malibu is it.”
