You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks Jaguars are lacking in performance, but the automaker says it is ratcheting up its sport appeal with its new F-TYPE convertible sports car. Drawing on provocative styling not seen from the brand since the iconic Jaguar XKE roadster of the 60s and 70s, the F-TYPE two-seater will compete directly with the likes of the Porsche 911 when it arrives at Jaguar dealerships in 2013.
Coming only in drop-top form, at least initially, the Jaguar F-TYPE will serve as a sportier alternative to the brand’s more luxury-minded offerings like the Jaguar XJ and XF series. All-aluminum construction will ensure an agile yet sturdy body, and a variety of gas-powered powerplants, including a new family of engines, will allow an uncompromised focus on speed and power.
“Jaguar feels it has been too long since they’ve competed in the two-seat sports car segment, but the F-TYPE will prove that the wait has been worth it,” said Mike Avery, general manager of Maine Jaguar dealer Jaguar Scarborough. “It is designed to capture the hearts of driving enthusiasts like its XKE predecessor did decades ago, but with a look that resonates with today’s buyers and high-tech performance that couldn’t have been dreamed of back then.”
The makings of the F-TYPE were first introduced to Jaguar fans with the debut of the C-X16 concept in September of last year, and consumer reaction was so positive that Jaguar accelerated its production schedule. Final on-road testing for the F-TYPE has begun, with prototypes currently rolling out of Jaguar’s production facility for additional refinement before the car’s mid-2013 release. The automaker has promised to release more technical details later in 2012.
Following its announcement of the F-TYPE at the New York International Auto Show earlier this month, Jaguar kept its buzz going by hosting an elaborate reception in the city’s Meatpacking District. Celebrating the brand’s past and future, the event displayed a number of Jaguar vehicles along with celebrities like musician Wyclef Jean and actor Tracy Morgan sharing their personal Jaguar stories.
Classic silver C-Type and D-Type Jaguar sports cars made an appearance at the New York City event, highlighting the British brand’s longstanding tradition of high performance. Attendees were also treated to a special Jaguar XKR that had been redesigned and painted by famous graffiti artist Kaves. Earlier at the auto expo, Jaguar debuted its 2013 XK and the 2013 XK Portfolio Pack, a new luxury trim that adds an abundance of soft-grain leather as well as hand-polished wood or dark-finished aluminum on the dash.
“The Portfolio Pack debuted on the 2012 XJ, and now XK buyers will be able to get the very best in interior materials as well,” remarked Avery. “Jaguar may be ramping up its efforts when its comes to sporty performance, but it certainly isn’t losing focus on providing a luxury feel that is unmatched by other brands.”
