Ford F-150 Outshines Chevy Silverado for 2012 Best Value in America Award

Vincentric Declares Ford Victorious in Battle of Full-Size, Half-Ton Pickups

03/22/2012 // Quincy, MA // CambridgePRGroup // Quirk Ford

The half-ton pickup battle between Ford and Chevy is a never-ending back-and-forth of one-upmanship, but the latest round has gone to the Ford F-150, thanks to a nod from automotive-research company Vincentric. The 2012 F-150 earned a 2012 Vincentric Best Value in America award in the full-size, half-ton pickup segment, marking the second year in a row that the hauler available at Ford dealerships took home the award instead of the Chevy Silverado.

For its annual Best Value in America awards, Vincentric assesses vehicles both in measured cost of ownership and expected cost of ownership. Measured cost of ownership is calculated by examining the costs of a vehicle’s depreciation, insurance, repairs, maintenance, finance, fuel, taxes, state fees and opportunity costs. Expected cost of ownership factors in the vehicle’s price and its relation to other vehicles’ costs of ownership within its segment.

“The great thing about the Vincentric Best Value in America awards is that they use hard numbers that are completely unbiased,” said Michael Quirk, general manager of Greater Boston Ford dealership Quirk Ford. “You don’t have to ask an F-150 owner why their truck is the best on the market, although I’m sure they’d love to tell you. The numbers speak volumes on their own.”

To become king of the half-ton pickup segment this year, the 2012 Ford F-150 excelled in fuel economy, delivering drivers the most miles per gallon in its class. The Ford pickup’s depreciation rate was also best in the segment, meaning F-150 owners are likely to receive the best return on their investment when they’re shopping for a new vehicle in the future. Vincentric also noted that the Ford costs relatively little to insure. Overall, F-150 ownership costs averaged around 3 percent lower than expected.

The Blue Oval brand is showing no signs of slowing down the fierce pickup competition. In an effort to continue improving upon its popular F-Series pickups, Ford has announced a new Platinum series for its 2013 F-Series Super Duty. When the new Super Duty Platinum rolls into dealerships later this year, it will offer premium features that cater specifically to manual laborers. For example, a truck-specific version of the SYNC with MyFord Touch infotainment system will offer larger knobs and buttons to aid drivers wearing work gloves.

Ford’s Platinum trim will be available for F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty crew cab models, and buyers will have a choice of either a 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine or a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine. Another work-friendly feature in the Platinum Super Duty will be a standard rear-view camera that will allow drivers to easily maneuver tight spaces or line up trailers by watching the eight-inch touchscreen display.

“Ford is showing drivers that heavy-duty trucks can do much more than just tow and haul large loads,” added Quirk. “The Super Duty’s Platinum trim won’t just add a level of luxury; it will help owners get the smaller details of their jobs done faster and easier. That is something that any worker can get behind.”
