Organisations must ensure their business continuity plan really works

/EINPresswire.com/IT Governance Ltd, the global leader in BS 25999 training, consultancy, books and tools, warns organisations that many business continuity plans fail as a result of inadequate planning or testing as well as failure to gain support from senior-level managers and directors.

Although many UK private and public sector organisations have developed a business continuity or disaster plan, it is not clear how many of these plans really do the job. Even staff responsible for implementing these plans is not always a guarantee that their organisation will be able to recover from the disruption caused by an unforeseen event. The risks are many and complex. They can include natural disasters, IT failure, civil emergencies, cyber crime. Therefore, an effective planning takes more than just having a policy in place.

As with all organisational management systems, staff responsible for their implementation plan should be adopting best practice approaches. In terms of business continuity planning BS 25999, the Business Continuity Standard, defines the specification and best practice guidelines to develop an effective Business Continuity Management System (BCMS).

IT Governance offers two products which, together, enable any organisation to make a comprehensive and effective start on implementing a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) that can be certified to BS 25999.

The Certified BCMS Foundation Course is designed to introduce Business Continuity Management and explain how the best practice guidance in BS 25999-1 can be used to ensure an organisation has business continuity plans that actually work (www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/2140). Delegates attending the course will also receive a complimentary copy of the BS25999: A Pocket Guide written by Tony Drewitt (www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/1579).

One delegate described his experience of the course like this: “I am pleased I attended this course at the start of our BS 25999 project. I’m sure what we covered will prove useful.”

Knowledge is a key aspect of implementing BS 25999. It is essential to reduce room for error and avoid the need for re-inventing wheels. The BS25999 BCMS Implementation Toolkit contains all the templates and tools that enable a BC manager to quickly and effectively implement a BCMS in line with BS 25999 (www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/2198). A demo version can be downloaded from www.itgovernance.co.uk/bs25999-toolkit-demo.aspx.

Organisations can book delegates onto the Certified BCMS Foundation Course online here www.itgovernance.co.uk/products/2140. They can also place an order directly with the friendly, helpful IT Governance service centre team on telephone number +44 (0)845 070 175. Larger organisations can make bookings or purchases with a purchase order either by telephone or by email to servicecentre@itgovernance.co.uk.
