Spar & Bernstein, specializing in immigration issues, has spotlighted an initiative in Georgia to allow illegal immigrants access to a college education.

The Law Offices of Spar & Bernstein, P.C. have recently spotlighted one of the major immigration issues that numerous illegal immigrants face in the United States: The inability to earn a college education. In a recent post on the law firm’s website, Spar & Bernstein has highlighted a new state law, which has been passed in Georgia, and called attention to the efforts of five individuals to rectify the consequences that this law will bear for illegal immigrants seeking a secondary education in the state of Georgia.

Five of the top schools in Georgia, including the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, Georgia Health Sciences University, and Georgia College & State University, have now closed their doors to illegal immigrants due to a new state law that requires all secondary education institutions to deny acceptance to illegal immigrants if they have denied acceptance to qualified citizens in the last two years.

The new policy was adopted in an effort to increase the availability of secondary educational resources to students that are legally living in the country; however, five professors at the University of Georgia have rallied against the policy by creating Freedom University. A small organization that offers a once a week course, Freedom University has been established to help illegal students maintain their education, though as of now the courses are not accredited and will not count towards state degree programs.

The Spar & Bernstein post cites the motivation behind Freedom University per Reinaldo Roman, one of the five professors that have organized its foundation: “What we’re hoping is that people in decision-making positions will reconsider the policy. It goes counter to our aims. We have invested enormous resources in these young people. It makes sense to give them a chance at an education.”
