The North Carolina State Bar certifies lawyers as specialists in family law as a service to the public. Board certification recognizes lawyers’ special knowledge, skill and proficiency in family law. To be certified as a family law specialist, a lawyer must have been in practice for at least five years, devoted a significant part of her practice to family law, attended continuing legal education seminars in family law, have been favorably evaluated by other lawyers and judges, and passed a written examination in family law.
