New Google Earth Tracks Environmental Changes

Dec. 8, 2010/EIN Presswire/ – Google has invented a new technology that gives scientists the ability to observe and measure environmental changes using 25 years worth of Google satellite data.

Google Earth Engine, a new aspect of Google Earth, was unveiled during the current climate talks in Cancun in a collaboration with NASA.

The new technology will be able to track deforestation and map land-use trends as well as measure changing forest and water resources. This data would normally take three years to process on a single computer, but the Google Earth Engine was able to compile and analyze the same amount of data in just one day.

Google will offer developing nations and science organizations 20 million free CPU hours to use the new platform, and Google officials hope Google Earth Engine will help with land management and preservation.
