Could States Kill Medicaid?

Nov 23, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ – Several states, including Texas, Washington and South Carolina, have discussed a possible end to receiving federal money for Medicaid programs.

Medicaid, a product of the Johnson administration, is partially funded by federal and state sources, and over 60 million Americans participate in the medical insurance program.

More states, mainly those run by Republican officials, are contemplating establishing their own more narrow programs instead of receiving federal dollars that must be matched by state budgets. Governor Rick Perry (R-TX) is one of the most outspoken advocates of dropping Medicaid for state-run health programs.

Washington state, predominately run by Democrats, is discussing withdrawing from the Medicaid program as an attempt to make up for the $6 billion state budget shortfall.
