Haiti Cholera Outbreak Due to Worsen

Nov. 15, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ – Haiti’s cholera epidemic has already claimed more than 900 lives and hospitalized more than 14,600 as it continues to spread. The lack of clean water and sanitation has caused cholera to spread to six of Haiti’s 10 provinces.

Several epidemiologists say that the onset of the disease has not yet peaked and will probably continue to spread throughout the country. United Nations health officials estimate that the disease could afflict more that 270,000 people.

The Haitian government is struggling to effectively fight cholera as the hospitals are in poor condition and still overflowing with earthquake victims. The United Nations recently requested $164 million in aid to help the Haitian government respond to the outbreak.
