Feds Seize Rodent-Infested Warehouse

Oct. 28, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ – A food warehouse which FDA inspectors found to be crawling with “live and dead rodents” was busted today by U.S. Marshals who seized $700,000 in rice and other packaged products.

The action stemmed from an inspection of the warehouse facilities in late September.

The Marshals were acting under a warrant issued by a U.S. federal court for the seizure of all FDA-regulated food stored in permeable containers. The complaint accused the warehouse operators with violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The warehouse is operated by Sun Hong Kai Holding, Inc., which does business under the name United Food Service.

The FDA complaint found “an active and widespread rodent infestation, including live and dead rodents within the warehouse where food products are stored.

“United Food Service not only failed to protect the food in this warehouse, it failed to act promptly to correct the violations.”

FDA investigators found 28 live rodents, one dead rodent, apparent rodent droppings, 26 apparent rodent gnaw holes in multiple packages of food products, rodent urine stains on food packaging and four rodent nesting sites.
