$2 Million Grant to Improve Food Safety

Oct 27, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $2 million grant to a Kansas State University lab to help improve food safety in beef and dairy farms.

Kansas State’s department of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology will collaborate with teams from Texas Tech University, Cornell University, Colorado State University and several other universities to implement ways of raising antibiotic resistance among cattle.

Professor H. Morgan Scott of Kansas State will be heading the project and believes the use of antibiotics for the prevention of bacterial infections is essential for producing safe food for customers.

The team also hopes the new model will enhance early detection of E.coli and help maximize the welfare of animals.
