US to Send Delegation to Turkey, Azerbaijan for Talks on Iran

Oct 19, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ – Stuart Levey, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, will meet with Turkish and Azeri officials and business leaders in Baku, Azerbaijan, this week in order to strengthen economic sanctions on Iran in cooperation with these neighboring countries.

In an attempt to enact sanctions recently passed by the United Nations against the current Iranian government, Levey will cultivate cultural and economic ties with Iran and Turkey and Azerbaijan. Iran is facing petroleum shortages, and Azerbaijan is a key player in supplying Iran with gasoline.

However, the Turkish government has made it clear that it will only support United Nations sanctions, not those mandated only by the US or the European Union.
US officials are praising the passage of new laws against Iran in the Senate in July that a creating a “never-before-seen” impact on Iran for its refusal to comply with UN standards and sanctions.
