White Plains, NY – Fire investigators in White Plains announced they plan to examine the basement of the Bengal Tiger restaurant Tuesday, July 13, 2010, in hopes to discover what sparked the blaze that destroyed a half block of the city last week. The Journal News reported the update.

According to Fire Chief Richard Lyman, “We finished getting the basement pumped out (Sunday) night…The excavator is coming back today to remove some unstable parapet walls, and the engineer will be here to check the stability and make sure everything’s safe. Once that happens, we can get the cause-and-origin team in there and start investigating the cause.”

The fire was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m., Wednesday July 7 and quickly spread from the basement of the restaurant to neighboring businesses.

Officials reported the businesses that were victim to the blaze shared a basement and attic area, which allowed the fire to grow out of control.

Approximately 60 firefighters from White Plains and surrounding areas responded to the fire, which took approximately seven hours to extinguish.

Some 31 firefighters and two civilians were hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation, heat exhaustion or heart palpitations. No injuries were serious though.

As the investigation continues, more information on the cause will come to light.
