Nintendo DS most-purchased hardware in June
July 16, 2010 — The redesigned Xbox 360 gave Microsoft a boost in hardware sales for June, making it the top-selling console for the month, according to the NPD Group. Video games sales dropped 15% from June 2010 with sales of $531.3 million.
Microsoft moved 451,700 Xbox 360s, about 30,000 more units sold than that of Nintendo’s Wii. Sony’s PlayStation 3 brought up the rear with a respectable 304,800 units sold. Nintendo DS was the top-selling hardware unit for the month, selling 510,700 units. The rival Sony handheld, PSP, sold 121,000 units. Hardware sales totaled $401.7 million, up 5% from last June.
While hardware manufacturers found success, game makers took a beating, with sales declining 15% from last year. The few bright spots in software sales were thanks to Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar Games and Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2. Red Dead Redemption sold 963,200 units between its PS3 and Xbox 360 offerings, moving the game’s total sales to 2.4 million to date. Super Mario Galaxy 2 notched a solid 548,400 units sold.
One surprise for the month was the failure of EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 to break the top 10. Sales of the newest edition of the golf franchise slipped 68% from last year’s version, according to NPD group.
Total US video game industry revenue year to date is $6.66 billion, down 9% from the first six months of 2009.
