July 29th, 2010 – Winter Garden, FL – (WiredPRNews) For months rumors of Google’s work on a new social network have circulated online. Earlier today former Facebook CTO and Quora cofounder, Adam D’Angelo, confirmed suspicions by spilling his knowledge on Quora.

Adam reported:

“Here is what I’ve pieced together from some reliable sources:

• This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this.

• They realized that Buzz wasn’t enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook.

• Unlike previous attempts (before Buzz at least), this is a high-priority project within Google.

• They had assumed that Facebook’s growth would slow as it grew, and that Facebook wouldn’t be able to have too much leverage over them, but then it just didn’t stop, and now they are really scared.”

Other industry icons, like Digg founder Kevin Rose, have also hinted at Google’s improved social network initiatives. Last weekend in a tweet that has since been deleted from his profile, Kevin wrote that he heard a “huge rumor” from a “very credible source” about a soon to be unveiled Facebook competitor from Google.

Speculations about Google Me are that the application will be launched sometime before 2011 in attempt not to be left in the dust by Facebook. Some think that the site will be a blend of Google’s current social network projects Buzz and Orkut. Yet others believe that a site built to truly compete with Facebook would need to be modeled after it, containing a similar interface with news feeds and personal profiles along with a developer platform and core applications.

Past Google efforts in creating social networking sites have not been the massive success stories one would expect from the industry giant. With the race to grow the biggest and best social network already well underway, Google will need to pull out some big tricks early on in the launch of Google Me to regain lost ground and divert current Facebook users attention.
