Forest Park, GA – An Army reservist was shot and killed by another reservist at the US Army Reserve Center in Fort Gillem, Thursday, June 17, 2010, as reported by WSBTV.com. The shooting suspect was in custody as of Thursday evening.
Army spokesman Col Dan Baggio reported the victim died at the Reserve Center. He did not give specifics of the shooting, which occurred sometime between 4:30 and 5 p.m., nor did he give the victim’s name. Authorities are waiting to release the name of the two men involved until family members are notified.
Authorities also reported that they have not determined a motive as of yet, and it is unclear as to what relationship the two shared.
The only information the authorities provided was, “We do know that the victim, a reserve soldier, died from wounds resulting from multiple gunshots. The shooting suspect, who is in custody, is also a reserve soldier.”
Officials stated the shooting suspect drove to civilian authorities after the shooting and turned himself in.
A spokesman for Fort Gillem and Fort McPherson also told reporters that they are unsure of whether anyone else was in the building at the time of the shooting.
Fort Gillem is one of three Georgia military bases that are slated to close as a result of a round of base closures that were decided in 2005. The 1,427-acre facility will close next year, along with nearby Fort McPherson and Naval Air Station-Atlanta.
