New York, NY – An off-duty MTA officer shot at a group of attackers, injuring one, early Wednesday, June 16, 2010, as reported by New York Daily News. The incident began after the officer was rear-ended by a fellow commuter.
At approximately 5:20 a.m., Edward Aiken was traveling to work on Randall’s Island and exiting from the southbound Major Deegan Expressway when he was hit by another vehicle. The impact pushed Aiken’s vehicle into a guardrail, according to police and MTA officials.
The officer exited his vehicle to speak with the other driver. The two then began to fight. The fight spurred other individuals to get out of the other car and attack the officer. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelley told reporters the officer “was on the ground. He was being beaten.”
The beating then prompted Aiken to pull out his pistol and shoot nine rounds toward the group of attackers. One shot connected and the group ran from the highway. One person was taken into custody after entering a hospital for a gunshot wound.
Three others were being held at the 44th Precinct stationhouse, sources stated.
As of Wednesday evening, no charges had been filed.
The officer was admitted to Jacobi Medical Center and treated for head trauma and a broken or dislocated knee.
