Boston, MA – A Massachusetts state trooper was struck by a vehicle and killed in the early morning hours of Friday, June 18, 2010, as reported by The Boston Channel. Two people were arrested and charged in connection with the death of the officer.
State police authorities reported that Sgt. Douglas Weddleton, 52, of Brockton, was outside of his vehicle on I-95 northbound in Mansfield when he was struck. He was working construction detail near Exit 6.
State Police Col. Marian J. McGovern said Weddleton was using his police cruiser to block an off ramp that was under construction when an Acura sedan tried to get around his vehicle.
Weddleton stopped the Acura from getting around his cruiser when a Ford-150 pickup truck rear-ended the Acura. The impact caused the Acura to hit Weddleton, throwing him across the highway.
A colleague who was working the detail with Weddleton witnessed the crash and ran to administer CPR. Weddleton was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleborough but did not survive his injuries, according to troopers at the scene.
The driver of the Acura was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the truck that rear-ended the Acura was charged with negligent motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence and speeding, among others.
Weddleton was described as a dedicated officer who spent many years in the ballistics unit. He is survived by a wife and four sons.
