New York, NY – A man who accidentally stepped into the gap between a subway car and the platform had his leg trapped and twisted as he was drug along the platform by the moving train on Thursday, June 17, 2010, as reported by WPIX. The accident occurred just after midnight.
The man became stuck in limbo between the train and platform after the D train prepared to pull out of the Grand St. Station in Lower Manhattan. He was taken to Bellvue Hospital, suffering non-life threatening injuries, according to reports.
Bystanders took video of the gruesome event and sent footage to television stations.
The incident is one of many accidents that have occurred due to gaps between railcars and platforms. In January of this year, MTA officials found that plans for the new South Ferry subway station would produce a gap between train and platform that was an inch larger than federal regulations allow.
The opening of that station was thus delayed. The cost to fix the error was estimated to cost approximately $200,000.
Many safety officials and critics claim that the cautionary “mind the gap” signs located throughout stations cannot prevent accidents during rush hour, when platforms are crowded and riders have a difficult time watching their step.
