The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association has announced it’s support for Minnesota’s new tobacco law.
The Tobacco Modernization and Compliance Act of 2010 updated Minnesota laws to address new forms of tobacco products, such as snus, disolvables and electronic cigarettes. While the law bans the sale of these products to minors, it keeps these much safer alternatives available to adult tobacco users.
“Several states have seen the wisdom of keeping the smokeless alternatives available for adult smokers, while banning the access of nicotine products to minors,” said CASAA’s medical director, Theresa Whitt, MD.
“Although it’s generally accepted by the medical community that the greatest danger from tobacco use is in the smoke, some well-known public health organizations have been attempting to ban these smokeless products in the hope that it will eliminate tobacco use,” Dr. Whitt said. “In reality, all that would accomplish is forcing tobacco users to use the most deadly product left on the market – tobacco cigarettes. The more tobacco smokers switch to these reduced-harm, smokeless alternatives, the fewer there are exposed to tobacco smoke and the better it is overall for public health.”
CASAA is a non-profit organization that works to ensure the availability of reduced-harm alternatives to smoking and to provide smokers and non-smokers alike with truthful information about such alternatives. It is run and funded completely by volunteers and receives no funding from electronic cigarette manufacturers, tobacco companies nor pharmeceutical companies.
