Chicago, IL – According to a recently published article in the journal Pediatrics, children in rural areas of the country are equally likely to die from gunshot wounds as those in urban areas. The report comes after an analysis of approximately 24,000 children’s deaths from 1999 through 2006.
According to the article, homicides involving guns are more common among city youth, but gun suicides and accidental fatal shootings level out the field. Rural youth are more prone to accidental shooting deaths and suicide shooting deaths.
The researchers studied data included some 24,000 gun-related fatalities among people 19-years-old and younger, from 1999 to 2006. The 24,000 deaths consisted of 15,000 homicides, approximately 7,000 suicides and approximately 1,400 accidental shootings.
The fatalities were sorted by county size. The researchers considered the rates from the most urban counties, those with populations exceeding one million or more, and compared them with the most rural counties, those with less than 2,500 people.
The results were relatively even across county lines. Approximately one in four deaths per 100,000 children were attributed to gun shots.
