Morristown, NJ – A 44-year-old woman was charged with the shooting death of her husband after one of her three children called a family member to report that Amalia Mirasola, a woman with multiple sclerosis who used a wheelchair, had shot and killed her 43-year-old husband, Carl Mirasola, as reported by The Star-Ledger.
Amalia was arrested after police found her husband, dead from multiple gunshot wounds, in their bedroom, according to prosecutors. The 911 call came in at approximately 8:06 a.m.
Authorities have declined to comment on details of the shooting, including what type of weapon was used.
Family members reported the couple were planning to end their 19-year marriage, and that their three children were in the home at the time of the shooting.
Amalia’s attorney claims the divorce was her idea, and that she has no recollection of the shooting.
Carl Mirasola’s family disputed the claims of who actually wanted the divorce though, stating it was Carl who wanted to separate.
The children, a 13-year-old girl and 7-year old twins, are staying with a relative in New York.
Amalia was diagnosed with MS in 2004. The disease has many symptoms, including the accompanying side effect of depression. Multiple sclerosis damages Myelin, a protective coating to the nerves that transmit signals affecting mood.
The Mayo Clinic defines Multiple sclerosis as “a potentially debilitating disease in which your body’s immune system eats away at the protective sheath that covers your nerves. This interferes with the communication between your brain and the rest of your body. Ultimately, this may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that’s not reversible.”
