Ashland, MA – A 28-year-old man from Milford drowned Sunday, May 23, 2010, after his canoe flipped over in Hopkinton State Park, as reported by WHDH – TV.
Firefighters reported Sydney Pereira was canoeing in the Hopkinton reservoir in the Ashland section of the park with a relative when the incident occurred. A friend of the family reported Pereira had canoed the area before.
It was also indicated he was not wearing a life vest. He reportedly knew how to swim. The man with Pereira was wearing a life jacket, according to fire officials.
Witnesses reported seeing the canoe flip, which knocked both men out of the boat. Family said they went to help, and the other boater swam to shore.
The boat was approximately 100 yards from the beach when it flipped. The water is approximately 30 feet deep at that location.
Divers searched the water for over three hours before locating the body.
Sydney Pereira is survived by a two-year-old son and the son’s mother. He is originally from Brazil.
It was reported that the mother of Pereira’s child was taken by ambulance for surveillance after fainting at the scene. The woman’s brother said she was overcome with grief.
