Brooklyn, NY – A federal judge set a settlement conference to resolve the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the fiancée of NYPD shooting victim Sean Bell on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, as reported by New York Daily News. The July 20 conference comes four years after Sean Bell was killed in a 50-shot attack from NYPD officers as he was leaving his bachelor party in the Jamaica section of Queens.
Bell’s fiancée, Nicole Paultre-Bell, and two other friends who were wounded by cops during the shoot-out are plaintiffs in the case.
City attorneys tried for another three-month delay, stating officials have still not decided whether or not to discipline the officers involved in the November 2006 shootings.
The officers involved were undercover detectives who were investigating reports of prostitution at the club the men were leaving. The police claimed they believed one of the victims had a gun. None of the men did.
Joseph Guzman, a father of three who was wounded in the blowout told reporters he suffers physically and financially. He stated his family faces $330,000 in unpaid medical bills. He stated, “The strain on my wife is unbelievable.”
While the exact sum of the potential payout is unknown, the plaintiffs’ attorney reminded the press of the cases of Ousmane Zongo and Abner Louima. The two cases against police officers ended in multi-million dollar settlements.
Tuesday, May 18, 2010 would have been Sean’s 27th birthday.
