May 13, 2010 — Reeling from more than a billion dollars of losses incurred because of volcanic ash disruptions, airlines are pressing European regulators to follow the US practice of imposing a 120-mile no-fly buffer zone for all planes rather than a wholesale shutdown of air traffic.
The new pressure comes after another weekend in which Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul volcano spewed ash, disrupting traffic between North America and Europe. European officials have been roundly criticized for over-reacting to the threat of airborne ash.
