May 12, 2010 — “The idea that US taxes are high now is pretty much nuts,” according to Michael Ettinger, head of economic policy at the liberal Center for American Progress.
He points to a new report in USA Today that says in 2009 Americans paid their lowest level of taxes since 1950. That number includes federal, state and local income, property and sales taxes.
The facts are at odds with conservative political movements such as the “Tea Party” that have criticized federal spending as being out of control. The overall tax burden hit bottom in December at 8.8% of income.
