May 11, 2010 – Rep. Earl Blumenauer has one solution for helping to pay for infrastructure changes to the nation’s water systems: tax bottled water.
The Oregon Democrat has introduced legislation that would raise $10 billion annually through a tax on bottlers. The proposed tax would be four cents per bottle of water.
A survey by the EPA states that over the next 20 years the US water systems are in line for $335 billion in repairs. However, representatives from the beverage industry feel as if bottled-water companies are being unfairly targeted when there are other industries that rely much more on public water than they do.
